Award-winning Rhymefest documentary, In My Father's House, comes to Tampa

The film sheds poignant light on the Chicago emcee as he reconnects with his traumatic past.

One of Chicago's great underrated hip hop talents — an emcee's emcee, if you will — Che “Rhymefest” Smith started earning some buzz in 2004 after co-writing Kanye West's Grammy-winning "Jesus Walks," then bringing on Kanye to guest and produce on his fine 2006 full-length debut, Blue Collar, waxing on downhome working class topics and rising above all the nonsense over top-quality production by the likes of Mark Ronson, No I.D. and Just Blaze, among others. (Kanye and Che have been friends since they were 15.] The album was a favorite of critics far and wide (Pitchfork.com gave it a healthy 8.0 rating), but even after everything falling into place for Rhymefest's fame — a well-regarded sophomore album in 2010, El Che, several quality mixtapes, and a run for political office (Chicago's 20th ward alderman) — he never quite made it to name recognition status.

This year saw him co-write 2015 Oscar-winning song "Glory" from the motion picture Selma, and become the subject of a new documentary from Emmy-nominated filmmakers Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg, In My Father’s House, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and has always won some awards at its other fest screenings.

The film tells Rhymefest's deeply personal story about fatherhood and redemption as it chronicles his efforts to build a future for his family by reconnecting with his traumatic past.

In My Father’s House opens nationwide on October 9, and screens in Tampa at AMC Veterans 24, and at various other theaters nationwide. Check out the trailer below, along with the full list of screening dates and locations.
