Loveless was for shoegaze rockers what Nirvana (whose Nevermind came out the same year) was for grunge: a touchstone by which future records of that genre would be judged. MBV excelled at creating simple, droney pop melodies wrapped in layers of reverb and instrumentation that bled together. At first listen, the record sounds gimmicky, like a bunch of slackers in a pawnshop playing electric guitars in unison. Given time, though (ideally through headphones), the obvious genius of Loveless becomes evident.
