Tampa Bay doesn’t get many chances to see Brother Cephus, and the band’s Friday, April 12 no-cover gig at downtown Tampa’s smoky, stiff-drink haven The Hub will hopefully find the homegrown outfit — fronted by brothers Seth and Gabe Davis — showing longtime fans what it's been up to since the release of a 2017 album, Not That Important, which was actually one of that year’s most important local indie-rock releases. Best friends Peter Kokkinakos and Ben Saylor bring their garage-rock outfit Jensen Serf Company to open the show alongside experimental act Gela. Get information on the gig via Facebook.

If you need a fix of local music before that, then visit Mermaid Tavern, which regularly embraces members of the Bay area music scene. This Thursday, April 11 show taps an electro post-punk act, Luuls, to join Portland expat Whirlynn on a bill of experimental sounds. It’ll cost you zero dollars to check this one out, and more information is available on Facebook.

There are a wealth of local shows packed into the rest of the week (have a look at the bottom of this post), but everything wraps up quite nicely on Wednesday, April 17 at Crowbar's Beer Garden Sessions when a pair of relatively younger acts — Sunola and Deb Ruby — get the chance to play alongside two Bay area rock and roll scene lifers (Shawn Kyle and Will Quinlan) who’ll be supported by another voice that’s quickly become one of Florida’s brightest folk singers, Josh Reilly. No cover for this Ybor City patio show where Jason “Clam Master Jay” Rodriguez stages one of his last local pop-ups before going back to Maine. Get information on the show via crowbarybor.com.
