Atlanta metal behemoths Mastodon put the finishing touches on their forthcoming fifth album, The Hunter, marked for a September 27 release. Drummer Brann Dailor has talked up the set quite a bit over the past few months - describing the material as "less proggy," more "stripped-down" and "riff oriented," and comparing it to 2004's Leviathan (my favorite!) before they hit the studio earlier this summer.
An advance single and accompanying video for "Black Tongue" is out now. It's certainly stripped-down and concise compared to the sprawling tracks on their awesome 2009 effort, Crack The Skye. Assuming this is their first album without an ambitious concept that is either self-contained or arches across multiple releases, like the loose elemental theme that dates back to their 2002 debut Remission, this track is certainly indicative of a back-to-basics approach. Dailor compared the new material to Leviathan, but "Black Tongue" would sound just as at home on Blood Mountain.
Watch the video after the jump.
