Dylan Shocks

Then gives them the kiss-off

The Other Side of the Mirror: Live at the Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965
BOB DYLAN

(Columbia/Legacy)

Digitally remastered footage of the early folk performances are fine, but what makes this DVD essential is when Dylan, backed by a crack band featuring guitar whiz Michael Bloomfield, "goes electric" in '65 — assaulting the audience with versions of "Maggie's Farm" and "Like a Rolling Stone" that proved more revolutionary than anything to that point in pop-music history. Thoroughly shocked and awed — yes, you can hear people boo — the crowd finally gets Dylan to return to the stage alone with his guitar and harmonica. He closes his brief acoustic set with "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," the most eloquent "fuck you" ever delivered. 4.5 stars
