Some noteworthy artists are performing tonight on either side of Tampa Bay. Take a look at the breakdown below, and peep what's coming up this weekend, too.
Oddisee with Rival, LB Legalize, Yung $murf DC-raised, Brooklyn-based producer/emcee Oddisee has a literate and pointed lyrical style, his flow accelerating or slowing to match the pace of lush hip hop production qualities that are jazz and soul-soaked and full of unexpected time signature changes you just don’t hear much in hip hop. (The Fader once called him ‘MC Escher.’) In fact, The Odd Tape (his just-released follow-up to 2015’s well-regarded LP, The Good Fight) is nearly free of raps, the instrumentals playing out like grooving day in the life of Oddisee. A must see. (Orpheum, Ybor City)
Donna The Buffalo Update New York’s roots-jam favorites return for another two-set stand in Tampa Bay, drawing the Herd from far and wide to soak up whatever sounds they cull from their 10-album repertoire. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)
Styx with .38 Special “Lady,” “Babe,” “Mr. Roboto,” “Too Much Time on my Hands,” “Come Sail Away” and various other charting hits from the Styx repertoire will likely make appearances on this night, along with various lesser known odes stretching across 15 albums and more than three decades of the soft prog band’s career. Jacksonville’s Southern-grinding rockers .38 Special (“Hold on Loosely,” “Caught Up in You”) supports. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater)
Pig Pen CD Release Party w/Boney Fiend/The Horribles/Sibyls Active in the Tampa Bay area for going on two decades, Pig Pen crafts hard-hitting punk that hearkens back to the classic grind of the Ramones, with a galloping NOFX pace and cheeky-nasty Guttermouth lyrical quality with a horror trope slant. The Bob Noxious-led band delivers a fresh album, Bad Mother Fucker, on this night and plays two sets for the occasion; the first touches on new material and cuts off recent EP releases (Lobster Boy and Gholish Terror), while the second celebrates Pig Pen’s history by performing the entirety of their first two albums (Bleedin' Drinkin' & Stinkin' and Short Bus Sing-A-Longs), with a fan karaoke twist. Live shows are wildly unhinged affairs that have been known to include fire-balls, ski masks and drunken debauchery, so you probably don’t want to miss this one, folks. (Fubar, St. Petersburg)
