During elementary school, Lil Poppa—who plays Celebrities Day & Night Club in Tampa on Saturday—started rapping in church, but at the age of 12 left the religious themes behind. The Jacksonville rapper got attention from record companies after the release of the heartbreaking single “Purple Hearts” based on the true story of surviving a shooting. Fast forward to an Interscope deal, which led to critically acclaimed albums including the May-released Blessed, I Guess.

FYI, the show at this Jackson Heights’ nightclub is advertised for kids and teens, but the 21-year-old’s lyrics are sometimes explicit so don’t get mad at us if your child comes away with some new words in their vocab. Oh, and probably put your “Mask On” since coronavirus is back on the rise.

Lil Poppa. Saturday, July 24, 7 p.m. $40-$100. Celebrities Day and Nightclub, Tampa. eventbrite.com
