A look back at The Queen is Dead

The Queen Is Dead: A Classic Album Under Review

(Sexy Intellectual)

The Smiths' 1986 indie-rock masterpiece, The Queen Is Dead, gets the genuflect treatment on this doc that features talking-head interviews with album engineer/co-producer Stephen Street, "fifth Smith" guitarist Craig Gannon and a cadre of academics/sycophants inclined to commentary like, "'There Is a Light That Never Goes Out' is one of the best songs of the past 100 years." Yeah, well, maybe, dude. None of the original Smiths show up (or condone) the doc, but there's plenty of mid-'80s footage of Morrissey on camera, playing up his self-cast role as pop-star martyr. 2.5 stars
