Live and Local Spotlight: Ed Woltil CD Release Show

Ed Woltil has been a fixture in the local music scene over the past three decades in legendary alterna-pop bands like Mad for Electra and the Headlights. Most recently, he’s lent his signature pop chops to the Ditchflowers with Brian Merrill (Barely Pink) and former Headlights bandmate Steve Robinson.

Now we get Ed on his own, celebrating the release of his first solo pop music full-length, Paper Boats (Sunshine Drenchy Records) — which is not his first solo music recording per se. “I actually released a CD of Christian music years ago, but that’s a different thing entirely,” Woltil shared a few months back.

For his secular solo debut, the “defiantly gentle“ Paper Boats, Woltil pares things down, showing off his penchant for reflective, Beatles-rootsy ballads that alternate between folksy storytelling to confessions of existential displacement in love and the modern world. The less is more approach works well thanks to the CD’s pitch-perfect recording.

Celebrate the new album with Ed and his cohorts at Ed Woltil’s Paper Boats CD Release Party this Saturday. The show, at downtown St. Pete’s acoustically pristine and ambiance-rich music spot Hideaway Café, and admission includes a copy of Paper Boats at no extra charge.

Opening the show will be special guest Dean Johanesen, followed by Ed performing both solo and with his new combo, Ed Woltil and the Loaded Question featuring Jeremy Douglass (keyboards), Michael Hoag (bass), and Dan DeGregory (drums). Along with new solo material, Woltil says the band will dip into The Ditchflowers songbook and perhaps pull out an additional musical surprise or two.
