Live music at Daddy Kool and Bananas lead Tampa Bay Record Store Day celebrations

Mojo will have a Taylor Swift themed drink (it's colored RED, naturally).

Fourteen years after its founding, Record Store Day (RSD) has gone fully mainstream (this year’s ambassador is Taylor Swift), and while folks like Jack White have sounded the alarm on a potential catastrophe for indie artists and labels looking to compete with majors as far as getting records pressed, there’s still never, ever, been a better time to be a year-long supporter of your local record store.

This weekend, shops across the Bay area open early (8 a.m. at some places, with Daddy Kool hosting breakfast food trucks at 7 a.m.) for the international holiday, ready to sling RSD exclusives, sales and giveaways. Even better is the live music element happening at Daddy Kool (crooner Mike Tony plays the 2 p.m. slot) and Bananas (music starting at 11 a.m. with darkwave act Luuls).

Be sure to spend lots of money at the register, tip your bartenders and return to the shop often, Record Store Day or not. Look below, then click through to see specials at some of our favorite local shops. And don't forget to go to Steelworker Records, which has never bought into the RSD hype, opting instead to just some of the best obscure metal in the Bay area.
