You’re gonna want to take some time to see the Florida Orchestra before it goes on break for the summer.
One of the last (and least expensive) chances to see a performance is on Thursday, May 23 when Michael Francis pulls the veil back on the story and process behind Dmitri Shostakovich’s early 20th century Symphony No. 5, which was written at the peak of Stalinist purges when Russian citizens for relocated or killed. Francis’ talk ends with a performance of the full work, and admission is pay-what-you-can.
If you’re the type that likes to buy musicians drinks after shows, then there’s also an after-party at the Hollander Hotel, which is down the street from Hough Hall at St. Petersburg’s Palladium Theater.
Another Russian, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, gets the attention of the orchestra this weekend during three performances of irresistible, emotional violin concerto, which is full of big, sweeping melodies and lush strings. Tampa’s Straz Center gets the first show, and shows are also happening on Saturday and Sunday in St. Petersburg (Mahaffey Theater) and Clearwater (Ruth Eckerd Hall), respectively.
Your last chance to see the Orchestra happens on Monday, May 27 when its Brass Quintet plays a show at Sundial in St. Petersburg.
