Make Way for Dionne Warwick

Dionne Warwick

(Scepter/Collector's Choice)

Warwick's '60s catalog has just been released on CD for the first time (which is kind of remarkable), and Make Way is the place to start. The album captures the elegant singer in top Bacharach/David mode on songs like "A House is Not a Home," "People," "Close to You," "Wishin' and Hopin' — along with hits "Reach Out For Me," "You'll Never Get to Heaven" and the rapturous "Walk on By." A lot of these tunes, soaked in strings and creamy horns, glide along on bossa nova or gentle Latin beats, making them pretty groundbreaking for their time. This music doesn't sound dated in the least.
