Slick-flowing, quick-spitting rappers Issa Dash and AK (The Underachievers) wax on some intellectually stimulating subject matter: disregarding universal negativity, creating your own reality, finding your third eye and becoming enlightened, smoking weed and taking LSD to open your chakras… The Brooklyn-based indie hip hop duo strike to keep the rap game politically, socially and spiritually relevant while spreading a message of love and connection, and have managed to win over critics with their mix of heady bravado and street lexicon; Pitchfork gave last year’s Indigoism mixtape a fatty 8.0 rating and debut full-length The Cellar Door: Terminus Ut Exordium is already drumming up a mighty buzz with first single “Incandescent,” featuring beat-busting production by Ryan Hemsworth. The noise-psych-doom outfit from Chicago issues a fourth full-length and first since 2009's GO?, that relates the three-year incarceration of guitarist Julius Moriarty and the separation from his partner, Walking Bicycles' vocalist Jocelyn Summers. According to the release, the narrative "is not a precautionary tale; it is an acquiescent chronicle of redemption garnered through strength and experience, describing not the rise and fall but the fall and rise. Along with Jason Leather (bass) and Deric Criss (drums), the four have musically, lyrically and emotionally captured a story of love and loss, estrangement and reunion, captivity and freedom." Deep.
