St. Petersburg doesn’t necessarily come to mind when discussing glam-inspired rock and roll. But after getting a feel for the aesthetic of the genre from local tastemaker, artist and creative force Adam Turkel, there’s little doubt left as to its significance.
As the mastermind behind the New Brutarians duo, Turkel’s new three-song single (along with drummer/bassist Christina Wright) makes a solid case for the eternal importance of bratty, no frills glam-pop. Turkel adds the right amount of swagger and snottiness to his delivery and smartly keeps the two original compositions on the record short, sweet and in your face. Accompanied by a guitar-drenched reading of Leonard Cohen’s classic “I’m Your Man,” Turkel begs to be paid attention to in the same manner Stiv Bators or Iggy Pop always commanded. “Rock Me I’m a Dadaist,” the three-song single’s opening cut, seesaws between smart new wave pop and snarling rock and roll. Heavy doses of power-pop and punk-rock emerge throughout this all-too-short 7” release and leave us, the listeners, wanting more.
It doesn’t hurt that Turkel is an accomplished pop artist either; the single comes packaged in a bright, colorful sleeve that recalls the heyday of independent new wave singles which suits the sounds captured on this slab of wax perfectly.
