Intelligent rock from Tampa

Palantine is Tampa's Vinnie Consentino, a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with a serious handle on vintage punk and the kind of intelligent, primal alternative rock that came to prominence in the early '90s. Palantine's self-titled, second full-length is rife with verve, hooks and wit, sustaining the listener from start to finish. "Timer," a three-minute kiss-off with a memorable chorus, has all the markings of a hit single, while the distortion-intensive "Stare Down Light" is the kind of spazz-out that works nicely near the end of any rock record. 3 stars
