Band of Horses’ Friday night set at Jannus Live in St. Petersurg, Florida was just what music fans needed after a shitty week that kicked off with a terror incident griping Las Vegas before Tom Petty passed away as a result of cardiac arrest. Our reviewer described moments from the 19-song set like this:
Band of Horses refused to lull anyone into any tranquility, either. Bridwell looked like could be frontman for Taking Back Sunday as he stalked the stage on “Islands on the Coast.” The crunch on “NW Apartment” and “The Great Salt Lake” was almost palpable, and the Horsies’ cover of “Can’t Hardly Wait” by the Replacements felt as joyous as 2 a.m. karaoke with your best friends. Even “St. Augustine” — a nylon-stringed lullaby from Band of Horses’ 2006 debut — got flipped into a doo-wop’ed, sock-hop ready dance number. Harmonized lead on “Laredo” sang out into the night, and the bittersweet reflection of “Solemn Oath” from a new album (last year’s Why Are You OK) played like power-pop bliss.
