A night that could've solely belonged to New Orleans didn't — and Clearwater was better for it. On day two of the 37th Clearwater Jazz Holiday at Coachman Park, The Crescent City arrived and gracefully took a backseat to beautiful weather and one of the Tampa area's brightest musical exports.
REVIEW: CLEARWATER JAZZ HOLIDAY NIGHT ONE
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, whose home base is a 55-year-old sacred space in New Orleans' French Quarter, took the stage at 8 p.m. and worked through an hour long set paying tribute to the many facets and sounds of their hometown's storied jazz tradition. Near the end of the set, creative director Ben Jaffe stepped away from his stand up bass to express a dream where he 'opened up the paper in the morning to read that 5,000 people danced as the moon peeked through the clouds.'"

The crowd had already been up to dance earlier in the set, and didn't look to be rising again for the time being. That was good and well, however, considering the cool sea breeze blowing through the park and clear skies overhead.
Clearwater Jazz Festival is for relaxing with friends and family (you can buy wine by the bottle at the vendor stands for Pete's sake), and while you won't be judged for dancing at the festival, you won't be judged for just cooling out on your blanket either.
It would be hard to stay still for Troy Andrews — aka Trombone Shorty — though.

The 30-year-old Tremé native has had a horn in his hand since the age of four, and for an hour and a half he treated the crowd to a set of rock-tinged party music that was non-traditional in every sense. Maybe it's because he's got the New Orleans jazz tradition running through every ounce of his blood, but there's nothing nostalgic about the way he blows into the trombone and trumpet. Andrews, is a loud and aggressive player, and that edge runs through every vein of his band, Orleans Avenue.
This was especially true for his horn section. Baritone sax player Dan Oestreicher was given so much room to run, and at times seemed to be hitting multiple octaves in what felt like one breath. He even rocked the mic for a medley that featured Orleans Avenue takes on Mystikal, Juvenille and Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Give It Away." It was a fitting nod to the rock outfit who recently tapped Andrews and his band to open their 2017 winter tour.

The highlight of the set, however, was the classiness Andrews displayed as he thrust Tampa saxophone player BK Jackson front and center several times during the performance. Jackson — a Blake High School and FAMU grad — mostly recently played with Prince before joining Orleans Avenue and sent searing solos into the night sky on several occasions. Throughout it all Andrews could be heard and seen pushing Jackson to blow harder for the hometown.
Watching Andrews, who is no stranger to these parts (he's played Sunshine Music and Blues Festival, Gasparilla Music Festival and even opened for Hall & Oates recently), be a bandleader is always a pleasure. Watching him give shine to a hometown boy gone global was even cooler.
