As Florida’s summer gets fully underway, the number of smaller acts making their way down south peters out while the big arena tours ramp up, hurricane season and sweltering heat be damned. There are some definite highlights on either end of the spectrum, however.

In June, country music heavyweight Garth Brooks hits Tampa for the first time in 15 years and plays a two-night stand with support from another biggie of the genre, wife Trisha Yearwood (June 5-6, Amalie Arena, Tampa), while favored Philly indie rock band The War on Drugs – purveyors of shoe-gazey rock soundscapes tinged in heartland and psychedelic sonic hues, drenched in melody and nostalgia – is sure to sell out their smaller-scale showing (June 15, The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City). July heralds the coming of “I’m Not the Only One” neo soul and R&B-pumping Brit, Sam Smith, hopefully recovered from the vocal cord surgery that caused him to reschedule much of his tour (July 21, Amalie Arena), while August sees a New Wave-spawned act hitting town that has spurred no little buzz around these parts: karma chameleon himself, Boy George, comes to town with his newly reunited Culture Club to play a newly renovated recreation complex (Aug. 15, Madeira Beach Waterfront Complex, Madeira Beach). Finally, MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheater hosts all kinds of music this summer ranging from mediocre to predictable to so-so to somewhat intriguing, but two equally noteworthy performers land there a mere five days apart: jazz-prog rock vets Steely Dan with an opening set by the coolest rock songwriter on the block with his band, Elvis Costello and The Imposters (Aug. 11) while hip hop’s current sexy intellectual with light crunk and funk appeal, J. Cole, hits the amp with his giant "Forest Hills Drive Tour,” with warm-up from Big Sean, YG and Jeremih (Aug. 16).
