Metal fans on both sides of the Bay have tough choices to make this weekend.

Swedish heavy metal quintet Avatar released Dance Devil Dance earlier this year, complete with a guest spot from Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale. We’re not confident that she’s going to show up at St. Pete's Jannus Live this Friday as a special guest to Avatar’s first show in town since a 2018 stop at The Ritz Ybor, but who needs guest spots when you have fellow metal outfits Veil of Maya and Orbit Culture opening things up?

Tickets to see Avatar play Jannus Live in St. Petersburg on Friday, May 19 are still available for $29.50

While Avatar tears up Jannus, another Swedish band—“ineffable kings of black metal” Dark Funeral—is at Tampa's Orpheum with a tour celebrating 30 years of Satanist anthems and shadows over Transylvania. A plethora of hardcore support opens the show, and the band might also be selling pieces of its discography on splat vinyl, so if your turntable needs something more metal than what you can find at Target, don’t snooze.

Tickets to see Dark Funeral play Orpheum in Tampa on Friday, may 19 are still available for $47. Subscribe to Creative Loafing newsletters.
