✔️ BRONCHO w/Yip Deceiver/Glove. BRONCHO’s long-running romance with Tampa Bay adds another lusty page to the story on Thursday when the Oklahoma indie-rock band brings a new album, Bad Behavior, to Crowbar. Guitarist Ryan Lindsey’s voice should be no stranger to locals (the band has been touring in the area since 2011’s Can’t Get Past The Lips), and the band that surrounds him — Nathan Price on drums, guitarist Ben King and Penny Pitchlynn on bass — has built upon a sound that’s grown sexier and even more endearing on Bad Behavior, where undeniably catchy dance grooves get married to BRONCHO’s tendency to meld a little art-rock into its punk-rock roots. Tampa rock band Glove. opens the show alongside of Montreal offshoot and dance-pop duo Yip Deceiver, which has thrown it all the way back to the ‘80s on a new, funked-up single called “Local Business.” (Crowbar, Ybor City) INFO
✔️ St. Paul and the Broken Bones For its third album, Young Sick Camellia, Birmingham soul outfit St. Paul & The Broken Bones turned to pop and hip-hop producer Jack Splash, who has worked with Kendrick Lamar, Diplo, Solange, Alicia Keys and more. The result is not some radio-ready move toward the mainstream, but the band’s deepest album to date. Credit frontman Paul Janeway for cracking his innermost feelings open and getting them on tape (the bespectacled, braggadocious crooner can be heard crying on tape during “Bruised Fruit”) and try not to get sucked into the allure of the voice of Janeway’s since-deceased grandfather, whose stories guide one of 2018’s most personal albums. ✔️ Rock The Park w/Pohgoh/Fever Beam/Mighty Jai Free, family and pet-friendly downtown Tampa concert series Rock the Park is going big for its final show of 2018. The series — where music kicks off just around sunset — is asking Mighty Jai to open the show, and the Bay area rapper is answering back in a big way by bringing a live band to back him up. Fever Beam, which is perhaps the best new Bay area band of the year, brings rockin’ twang to the middle of the bill before a tried-and-true emo favorite, Tampa’s very own Pohgoh, plays in support of a comeback LP, Secret Club, which it released this year. Every one of these outfits has been a highlight on the local music calendar, so it’s really cool to see them come together for a show that hopefully introduces the bands to an entire crop of new fans. Home Free Tampa Theatre has been on a roll as of late (Iron & Wine just played a funky, folky set there and Wilco’s Jeff TWeedy just booked a solo date at the historic theatre), and this show finds Mankato, Minnesota a capella quintet Home Free sending the sounds from its 2017 album, Timeless, into the air. Precious Child w/Whirlynn/Gay St. Pete Housewives It’s been less than a year since Precious Child played Mojo Books & Records in Tampa, and now the experimental L.A. upstart is back in the Bay area (St. Petersburg’s The Bends, this time) for a free concert where dream-pop outfit Whirlynn and Gay St. Pete Housewives (the latter is the noise project of Jasmine Deja of Soapbox Soliloquy and Whitey Alabastard’s Nick Boutwell) open the show.
