Tampa Bay's weekend concert calendar is a local jazz lover's dream

Katara, Ethos of Aldissi, Ona Kirei and La Lucha are just a few of the bands in action on both sides of the Bay

It’s a wonderful weekend to be a fan of jazz in Tampa Bay, and Katara is at the center of it all.

The group—multi-instrumentalist and harpist Seth Lynn, drummer Natalie Depergola, bassists Jon Shea, plus guests—plays Tampa’s Hooch and Hive in the West River district on Friday, July 8. Another outfit featuring Lynn on bass plus frenetic drummer Roger Lanfranchi and band namesake Anthony Aldissi on keys plays support (Aldissi, who fronts Ethos of Aldissi, once brought Chick Corea’s Three Quartets to life in Orlando). Saxophonist Nick Bredal, aka Chooty B, rounds things out on Friday.

Katara then heads over the bridge to Dunedin Brewery on Saturday, July 9 for another no-cover affair, “Summafest,” featuring a straight up superbill of soulful Florida acts (R&B jazz-rock collective EarthTonez, avant-groove outfit Zero Context) all playing support for a Dallas power jazz and gospel band Sketch.

And if you need even more jazz in your life, Best of the Bay-winning trio La Lucha plays a free Sunday show in Seminole Heights after backing up Spanish vocalist Ona Kirei the day before in St. Petersburg.
