The Hip Hop ABCs: Winner of Letter E; vote on Letter F

You have stumbled upon the second edition of the Hip Hop ABCs, where we try to find out which emcee or group is the best in the game as driven by the letters of the alphabet. No stated criteria. You don’t have to be a certified hip-hop head to vote. All you have to do is have an opinion on who you think most deserves to represent rap for a given letter.

Our first run through the alphabet was driven by discussions I had with fans on my Facebook page. This time around we have opened up the voting to everyone. Last week’s Letter D shocker reminded me both of hip-hop’s versatility and how much music is out there that I still don’t know. The winner of the Letter E brings us a group that is much more familiar.

Eric B. & Rakim are one of the quintessential DJ/MC duos. Eric B., born Eric Barrier put in work on the turntables and crafted their sound. Rakim (William Michael Griffin Jr.) delivered rhymes that have proven to be timeless despite how little time he needed to write them. Paid In Full, the first of their four albums, was reportedly completed in a week.

There was absolutely no sign of a sophomore slump with this tandem. The first three songs on Follow the Leader are the auditory equivalent of Mike Tyson’s first 20 pro fights. The duo would go on to create Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em and Don’t Sweat The Technique before disbanding. Rakim is still active musically and his influence is immeasurable.

Eric B. is President and Eric B. and Rakim are your winners of the Hip Hop ABCs Letter E. Who gets your vote for F?

Infinite Skillz is a Hip Hop fan and emcee. Click here to find out more about his music.
