In 2004, I worked security at the Masquerade (now The Ritz) in Ybor City. One of the biggest shows that year was by a fast-rising band called The Killers.

Fifteen years later, the Las Vegas outfit is a bonafide global superstar set to headline night one of 97X’s Next Big Thing on Friday, November 22. What’s crazy, however, is that frontman Brandon Flowers & co. are going for a warmup the night before at the relatively tiny Orpheum.

Tickets for what’s being billed as a Next Big Thing pre-party go on sale Friday, November 15 at 10 a.m. and cost $75. More information is at

The Orpheum’s Facebook page says capacity at the venue is 720. Good luck getting in.
