Freekbass & the Bump Assembly Bootsy Collins-approved low-end commander Freekbass has cultivated an appreciative audience in Dunedin’s jam-hospitable territories. His potent, dance-inducing balance of warm vintage ‘70s funk ala Sly and the Family Stone (“Rise”) and sci-fi futuristic pedal-effected grooves with general weirdness and P-Funk roots (“Mama’s Like a Cowboy”) are propelled by his fat string bending, thumping, plucking and bumping. Since his last go ‘round behind 2014 sophomore release, Everybody’s Feelin’ Real, Freekbass has been signed to esteemed Chicago-area indie label Ropeadope Records (home to Snarky Puppy), and is already working on material for a follow-up with his Bump Assembly – drummer Big Bamn (Bootsy Collin’s Funk Unity Band) and sax player Dan Barger. WMNF Tribute to the British Invasion with The Mojo Gurus, Sara Rose Band, The Shaguars, The Vodkanauts, Ricky Wilcox and the Moonsnakes, Sister’s Act, Delta 88, Jct 27, Pretty Voices, Ella Jet, Glad All Over, Christie Lenee, Parson Brown, Will Quinlan, Bleu Gravy, Joe Milligan Project, The Trawlers, Little Sheba and The Shamans Instead of a single artist getting his or her due, WMNF has opted to tackle a breadth of influential sounds that came out of the UK in the 1960s. Lots of appealing genre-ranging local acts (18 total) put on musical costumes, so to speak, while revealing their respective favorite British Invasion band in three-song sets. Among the most enticing highlights – Sara Rose Band as Dusty Springfield, The Vodkanauts as Tom Jones, Ricky Wilcox and the Moonsnakes as The Who, Pretty Voices as The Troggs, Will Quinlan as Donovan, and three years of Beatles by Ella Jet (1963), Glad All Over (1964) and Lenee (1965). The Mojo Gurus bring the evening to a howling close with an extended set of The Rolling Stones. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)
Lil’ Dicky with Swamp Posse It’s always a bitch when you and your new squeeze run into her old one, especially if you still haven’t hit it, though you’d never find your average rapper admitting such. Enter Lil’ Dickey, an emcee/comedian who’s unafraid to let his upper middle class Jewish roots hang out in refreshingly self-deprecating, bravado-free odes that find him waxing on everyday experiences and occurrences, his response to the rap game’s unrelatable ego-driven subject matter. The YouTube video that thrust him into the spotlight, “Ex-Boyfriend” – which clocked 1 million views in 24 hours and now stands at 9.9 million – finds his quicksilver, stream-of-consciousness flow reading more like an inner dialogue of self-doubt as he meets his girl’s gorgeous ex, his method of twisting sentences into unexpected rhyme schemes packing a lot of fretful humor into the track. Post-Rays Concert Series: Lee Brice After the Rays face the Chicago White Sox, country music singer-songwriter Lee Brice takes the Trop stage with three albums worth of boot-scooting tunes, like No. 1 Country Airplay charters “I Drive Your Truck,” “I Don’t Dance” and “A Woman Like You.” (Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg)
