The Mountain Goats with Blank Range John Darnielle has a soft spot for our city – or so he claimed at The Mountain Goats’ sold-out Crowbar show three years back. (“Tampa. I’ve loved that word since I was a kid,” he commented. “You could beat someone’s ass with that word.”) The past performances in our town with his group, The Mountain Goats. The folk rock darlings have brought us their marriage of poignant and stomping folk rock storytelling, self-deprecating humor and personal narratives regularly enough (and even recorded All Eternals Deck at the Bay area’s own MANA Studios with Eric Rutan) that we are inclined to believe him. This date follows the release of 15th studio album, Beat The Champ, a collection of songs about professional wrestling. (Orpheum, Ybor City)
Pohgoh with Geri X Baltimore's Thrushes had to back out of the bill, but that only means that the (super exciting) re-appearance by Pohgoh (the first since NG Records’ 20th anniversary party) will go on for longer than expected. The night begins with a set by indie folk rock siren Geri X at 11 p.m. Pohgoh is due to hit the stage around midnight. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Funk Cancer A funk-jiving live charity event to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation; every $100 raised goes towards providing mammograms for women (and men) who can’t afford to pay for one on their own. The Amsterdam opens up a second outdoor stage for Funk Cancer, and the festivities kick off with NoNeed at noon. Then (in order of appearance), it’s Ella Jet, Row Jomah, Meg Shannon, The Real Clash, Serotonic, Green Sunshine, Holey Miss Moley, Ajeva and closing things out at midnight with a light-dazzled bang is Atlanta quintet, Copious Jones. Admission is $10 for the entire day. (The Amsterdam, St. Petersburg)
Kenny Neal with Moreland & Arbuckle Recent Louisiana Music Hall of Fame inductee Kenny Neal was born in New Orleans, raised in Baton Rouge, and infuses his shuffling and rolling blues sound with heavy-handed swamp soul, wailing electric guitar or blowing fiery harmonica on upwards of 15 records in his more than 25-year career.
