This Sunday in live music: Appleseed Collective, Shy Girls, Order of the Owl, Dan McMillion

Concerts this Sun., May 10

Look, it's more music! Check out what's happening this Sun., May 10, below.

Appleseed Collective A bright, boisterous and exceedingly charming Americana quartet from Ann Arbor, Mich., Appleseed Collective revives string band music while dosing it in gypsy-Django and Joplin-ragtime flavors. Their instrumentals are built on mandolin, guitar, violin, upright bass, washboard and kitchen sink percussion, driven by three-part vocal harmonies, and have an overall old-timey appeal that somehow manages to feel fresh. If you missed Appleseed Collective’s Heatwave set or want a second serving, the show kicks off at 4 p.m. Bring mom. I bet she’ll dig it. (Ale and the Witch, St. Petersburg)

Shy Girls with Young Ejecta Shy Girls is the dreamy, minimal yet refined PBR&B project of Portland’s falsetto crooner Dan Vidmar, who started in his bedroom (as these modern sound makers often do) and maintains the intimate, seductive slow jam vibe even after 2011 debut EP Sex and the City pushed him onto the stage and forced him to bring a few more players into his mix. RIYL: Weeknd, Frank Ocean. Also performing: synth-pop duo Young Ejecta, made up of Neon Indian keyboardist/vocalist Leanne Macomber and producer Joel Ford (Ford & Lopatin). (Crowbar, Ybor City)

Order of the Owl with Throatpunch, Servants Of The Mist, Julia Set New World presents a Sunday night of ominous reverberations with a bill headed up by two metal bands from Atlanta. Order of the Owl sets guttural utterances and monotone moans over slow-roiling, sludgy instrumentals, while Throatpunch amps up the tempos by about 100 and pits barked and roared vocals over grinding and hard-grooving technicality. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)

Dan McMillion & High Octane A jazz trumpeter for more than five decades, McMillion continues to stay active leading his swinging big band orchestra. This Sunday evening performance pays tribute to another trumpet great, Maynard Ferguson, with a program of his compositions. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)
