Tonight in live music: Great Peacock at Rock the Park, Sonic Graffiti tour kick-off & more

A look at live music happening this Thurs., July 2, plus a peek at what's to come this weekend.

Tomorrow is a national holiday, which means that this Thurs., July 2, is the start of a three-day weekend! Go see some live music. Here are some suggestions; full breakdown of the weekend's coming concerts included as well...

Rock the Park: Great Peacock, Tidal Wave, Will Quinlan The July edition of the monthly outdoor concert series features Deep South-brewed, Nashville-based Great Peacock. The quintet plies big beat folk rock with pop sparkle and country shine, marked by the bright vocal harmonies of co-frontmen Andrew Nelson and Blount Floyd, fiddle and pedal steel melodies, strummed acoustic guitars, and driving momentum that occasionally slows to a more pensive, bridled pace. Sophomore album Making Ghosts was released via This American Music in March. (Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, Tampa)

Peace of Woodstock Uncle John’s Band will be in Chicago this weekend, playing three consecutive afternoons at The Field Museum in honor of the Grateful Dead’s Fare Thee Well concerts happening right next door. Hence, why the always-scheduled Grateful Dead Night isn’t happening this Thursday. Instead, Peace of Woodstock entertains with a different musical tribute – to Woodstock ’69 and the artists performed at the historic fest, the setlist touching on songs like “Piece of My Heart” by Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit,” and “Pinball Wizard” by The Who, along with Santana and Sly and the Family Stone medleys, among others. Sonic Graffiti Tour Kick-Off with Part Time Models, Ask for a Tiger, An Atomic Whirl Sonic Graffiti has been drumming up a rather mighty buzz since hurtling onto the local music scene a few years ago with an unruly, tongue-in-cheeky, ball-busting attack of funky-raw garage-blues and soulful rock noise with warped-oozy guitar passages creeping through the crunchy distortion, wailing reverb and ripping solos. Last year saw the release of fine debut Friendly Unit Creation Kit. They’ve recorded an all-analog follow-up, Under the Under Dogs, and like Beyonce (but with less diva’tude), plan to release each song with its own music video. In the meantime, an East Coast tour, and this date marks its launch. (The Bends, St. Petersburg)

Dierks Bentley with Kip Moore, Maddie & Tae, Canaan Smith On his current “Sounds of Summer Tour,” country music singer-songwriter Dierks Bently tours behind chart-topping seventh album The Riser, singles like “Say You Do” a tender rambling ballad that finds a man begging his ex-lover to come back, even if it’s just for a night, while “Drunk on a Plane” is a cheeky up-tempo ode about the adventures of a man who’s been left behind at the altar and goes on his honeymoon alone.
