Greensky Bluegrass with The Last Bison Double-bass thumping provides the lowend foundation in the dashing and rambling music of Michigan jamgrass quintet Greensky Bluegrass, their four-part vocal harmonies led by the soulful drawl and deft mandolin work of Paul Hoffman, and soaring over tight instrumental interplay with bandmates on plucked and strummed acoustic guitar, banjo, and dobro or sliding lap steel. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
Midge Ure Ultravox often gets props for its early influence on techno music, and frontman Midge Ure is responsible for the stylistic trajectory that ushered the British New Wave outfit into more electro-synthesized sonic realms when he replaced original singer John Foxx in 1980; he also took them to the UK charts with 17 Top 40 singles. Ure (also the co-conspirator of Band Aid and Live Aid) has eight LPs in addition to the songs he produced with Ultravox; the last was 2014’s Fragile, his first album of new material in more than a decade. This solo acoustic date supports. (Local 662, St. Petersburg)
Ben Howard Supporting a fresh sophomore album, I Forget Where We Were, sweet-voiced British indie folk singer-songwriter Ben Howard hasn’t had much success in the U.S. despite hit No. 1 status on the UK and Scottish Albums charts – not yet, anyway. But he’s sure to win new hearts when he hits these shores with his exuberant five-piece and poignant melody-rich singles like “Conrad,” and the title track, which builds to a sublime, slow-driving climax of plucked and string-bent guitar notes and roiling drumbeats. Municipal Waste with Torche, Night Birds, Meatwound A crushing and raging lineup led by Virginia’s cheeky crossover thrash quartet, Municipal Waste, songs like “The Wrath of the Severed Head,” “Abusement Park,” and “Covered in Sick/The Barfer” filled with booze, monsters and plenty of aggression. Helios Jazz Orchestra feat. Eliana Blanchard & Bryan Hughes The Dave Manson-led big band presents jazz classics with guests Blanchard (who you normally see belting with The Real Clash but puts her torch singing pipes to use for this program) and Hughes (who has Sinatra/Rat Pack finesse).
