Harpeth Rising Crafting folk-Americana tunes with classically-trained chops and chamber music sensibility – bowed, strummed and plucked cello and violin, finger-picked and thrummed claw hammer banjo, three-part dulcet-toned harmonies with light Appalachia inflection – Harpeth Rising is a Nashville-based trio on tour behind debut release Tales from Jackson Bridge. Aaron Carter with Crazy Carls, Eden Shireen, Infinite Eights Brother to Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, Aaron has a more groove-oriented swagger, though he remains firmly rooted in pop and dance music sounds. Even though he hasn’t put out any new tunes since 2002, his 1997 self-titled debut – which dropped when he was only 10 years old — made him an international star; when he returned to the road in 2013 after eight years of inactivity, he still managed to draw fans of hits from his prepubescent and teenage years. Fabulous Nosecaps Palladium Benefit Concert Two decades after their last performance, Fabulous Nosecaps reunite to play a concert of ‘50s and ‘60s-era rock n’ roll oldies to benefit Friends of the Palladium. The Bay area garage band was formerly made up of all newspaper reporters who are currently St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay Times formers: keyboardist Roy Peter Clark, bassist Greg Huffman, guitar player Dave Scheiber, drummer Mike Foley and vocalists Bev Childs and Jeff Klinkenberg; the latter was the last hold-out at the Times until his buyout-fueled departure in September and has apparently dubbed this gig “The Buy-Out Blowout.” (Palldium Theater, St. Petersburg)
Little Manatee River Jam The roots rock jam fest presented by WMNF draws locals south to Wimauma for a few days of music and camping at a scenic oaks-shrouded site located on the Manatee River. The fun kicks off on Friday evening with sets by Ed Carter; Under the Willow, J.D. and Zelda Lewis, and Ober and his D.U.I.’s. Performers on Saturday include Bay area favorites Damon Fowler Group, Have Gun, Will Travel, Good Graeff, Ari and the Alibis, Shane Meade and the Sound, and Talk To Mark. (Canoe Outpost, Wimauma)
SALES with Luxury Mane, Soapbox Soliloquy Hailing from Orlando, SALES crafts lo-fi guitar-driven electro pop carried on down-tempo drum-machine beats, littered with glitchy samples and found sounds, and brightened by the clear, delicate, heart-squeezing pretty pipings of Lauren Morgan and occasional lower sighing intones of co-bandleader Jordan Shih. The duo just issued a six-song self-titled EP; this date supports. (Mojo Books & Records, Tampa)
Clockwork Indigo with Obey City Two Brooklyn-bred alt-hip hop acts come together to make Clockwork Indigo: Flatbush Zombies, made up of “Beast Coast” rappers Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice and rapper/producer Erick “Arc” Elliott, and heady duo The Underachievers (emcees AK and Issa Gold), signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. The two groups first collabed on the single “No Religion” for a Flatbush mixtape, and came together again for the just-released Clockwork Indigo EP, the five rhyme-slingers taking turns trading verses over some dramatic vintage soulful-meets-glitched out production by Architect. I imagine both groups will perform solo sets in addition to colliding for the Clockwork Indigo joints. (Orpheum, Ybor City)
Brian Busto BDay Celebration with Doc Martin Hyde Park Café’s house music resident and Serious Soul host celebrates his birthday in the usual way – with some dark n’ grimy house and tech-house grooves – as well as inviting one of his own favorite decks maestros to join him: Sublevel’s famed beat-mixer/founder Doc Martin, who wields a collection of classic rare records when he spins live and is known for using vintage sounds to create modern pulsing sonicscapes that call on elements of tribal, funk, acid and deep house music. America Rambling, easy-going folk rock odes like “A Horse with No Name,” “Ventura Highway,” “Sister Golden Hair,” “You Can Do Magic” and “Lonely People” are all likely on tap for this date by the ‘70s-spawned outfit from London co-led by Gerry Beckley (vocals, keys, guitars, bass, harmonica) and Dewey Bunnell (vocals, guitars, percs). Shane Meade & The Sound with Betty Fox Band Two Tampa Bay talents come together on this Skipperdome Friday. Singer-songwriter Shane Meade heads up the festivities with his soul-stroked, lightly funky and jazzy folk rock sounds. On this night, he’s joined by Fil Pate (guitar), Bo McMillion (bass), Casey Otto (keys) and Stix Newsom (drums). Howling blues songstress Betty Fox and her tight and sizzling band also perform. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)
Car Bomb Driver with Pretty Voices, Radarmen, Dead Fender Twin It’s been quite a while since the mighty and venerable Car Bomb Driver brought its snide, smart and snarling brand of old-school-influenced punk to the New World’s patio. Great bill. Do it. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) –Scott Harrell
