Imagine Dragons with Metric, Halsey Every time Imagine Dragons comes to town, the Grammy-winning pop-emotive Las Vegas alt-rock outfit advances to a roomier stage. From opening for AWOLNATION at The Ritz Ybor in 2012, to playing an early slot at 97X Next Big Thing at Vinoy Park later that year, to headlining the USF Sun Dome in 2013 and then a bona fide arena on this night. The setlist will likely touch on Billboard Rock Chart-ing hits like the relentless hard-hitting battle cry of “Radioactive,” and off this year’s sophomore LP, Smoke + Mirrors, the stirring synthesizer-fueled “Shots” and giant percussive stomp of “I Bet My Life on You.” Metric, the Canadian New Wave-flavored synth-rock outfit led by Broken Social Scene’s Emily Haines, provides apt warm-up, as does indie pop-groove songstress Halsey. Anthony Raneri with What’s Eating Gilbert, Allison Weiss Fresh off the 15th anniversary tour with his main punk/alt-rock band Bayside, Anthony Raneri hits the road again doing his pop-sweeter singer-songwriter thing, delivering silkily high-toned pitch-perfect vocals in whistle-embellished bass-burping ode “String Me Along,” while new single “Gone” (off just-released sophomore solo album Sorry State of Mind) touches electronic folk notes with big synths, acoustic guitars, and Raneri’s clear calls soaring over top and treated with occasional robo-effects. What’s Eating Gilbert is the punk-twangy project of New Found Glory founder/guitarist Chad Gilbert (also the fiancé of Paramore lead Hayley Williams), and opening the evening is LA-by-way-of-Augusta, Ga. indie pop songstress Allison Weiss. Side Door Boogie Woogie: Bob Seeley with Liz Pennock & Dr. Blues An elder statesman of vintage stomp whose piano-driven sound encompasses ragtime, stride, blues and boogie woogie, Bob Seeley has been caressing ivories for many decades. He was influenced by his longtime acquaintance with Meade Lux Lewis, which started in the ‘40s and lasted through the ‘60s to Lewis’ death; played piano with Art Tatum and Eubie Blake; and accompanied blues-jazz vocal icon Sippie Wallace regularly. The octogenarian is joined by our own boogie-ing duo, Liz Pennock & Dr. Blues, the former on keys, the latter on electric guitar, with trade-offs on lead and back-up vocals. The Twisty Summer Beach Party with The World Has Turned, The Wrenchers, Twisty Chris and the Puddin' Packs, Saganaki Bomb Squad It's a sun n' sand-themed rock n' roll party with surf, punk, garage, ska and alt rock livening up the night, beach-themed art on display and available for purchase from locals Paul Barnes, The Girl That Ate Suburbia, Lars-Erik Robinson, Nicholas Vale Andrews, The Manic Beader and others. An evening with BJ Barham The frontman for locally beloved Raleigh, N.C. alt-country act American Aquarium returns for another of his always-anticipated solo shows at New World. Barham’s got the barstool-storytelling thing down pat, and we mean that in a good way — he’s earnest, funny and humble without it ever seeming like a performance, and he’s been known to play until he’s literally out of tunes. Assassinate the Scientist with Mind the Canvas, Shadow Laughter, Awkward Age, Dead Meat It’s been a while since this fan saw rollicking, eclectic Gainesville punk act Assassinate the Scientist live, but if memory serves, the group’s vibe is perfect for the sort of classic house-show atmosphere St. Pete’s Nine 10 is becoming known for. Plus, you’ve got new-ish local ska-punk act Mind the Canvas (risen from the ashes of Can’t Do It) and freshly road-honed muscular ‘n’ moody pop-punk trio Awkward Age (pretty much just out of the van), plus more, so shit, let’s do this. Tropical Heatwave Deja Vu with Trae Pierce & T-Stone Band, Come Back Alice WMNF brings two acts that staged stellar live sets at this year’s Tropical Heatwave to the Skipperdome stage for a redux. Four-piece Sarasota-brewed outfit Come Back Alice (which performed a fest-closing slot at the Ritz) crafts gypsy rock with a strong rhythmic foundation as co-led by guitarist, Hammond B3 player and soulful singer Tony Tyler and wife-to-be Dani Jaye on sweet harmonies and lead calls, fiddle and occasional guitar. Orlando-area low-end virtuoso Trae Pierce staged a hot-funk howling, bass-banging-and-sliding Heatwave set, holding the packed Cantina in check with T-Stone Band’s danceable grooves and well-placed use of talkbox. He had a pretty jaunty top hat, too. On this night, both groups play extended sets, then team up at the night’s end for a jam session grand finale. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)—LP
Guttermouth with Forgiving Silence, The Scurvy, Mosquito Teeth, Moral Decline, Flag On Fire Is it ever a good thing when you can’t remember if a punk act actually broke up and is on a reunion jaunt, or has been active all this time in the background? Probably not. SoCal’s aptly named Guttermouth thrilled young NOFX fans back in the day (late ‘80s through mid-to-late-’90s) with sophomoric humor and a capably energetic sound that arguably split the difference between speedier pop-punk and more hardcore fare. Whether or not you’ve outgrown the group’s aesthetic is your call, but there are also several notable old-school-influenced locals on this bill to sweeten the deal. (Brass Mug, Tampa) —SH
