Swedish singer-songwriter and one-third of Juniper Jose Gonzalez has a warm and tender vocal quality like a sweet caress of melody winging and gliding over sparse arrangements of gentle or more spirited finger-picked classical guitar that sings phrases in altered tunings. The whole ‘man and his guitar’ schtick is hard to pull off, but by all accounts (and performances I’ve check out on late night TV and YouTube), Gonzalez has an intensity that is hard to look away from. Not sure how much he’ll fill up the State, but third full-length Vestiges & Claws (which saw its U.S. release earlier this year) sure did get some media love (I’ll admit, I’m smitten, too), and the show’s announcement stirred up an appreciative buzz from local scenesters, so it’s possible the place will be packed. Fingers crossed for his distinctive re-imagining of Massive Attack’s lovely “Teardrop.” 8 p.m. doors, State Theatre, St. Petersburg, $25.
