The Florida Orchestra: Pops In The Park The Florida Orchestra’s fall season is in full swing, so their days are packed, but the organization’s crown jewels for this week are a pair of free, outdoor shows where Steven Jarvi conducts a symphony featuring selections from movies (Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark), musicals (South Pacific, The Producers) and more traditional selections from Shostakovich and Rimsky-Korsakov. Saturday’s affair at Vinoy Park will feature fireworks, and attendees for both events (the show happens again Sunday at Sulphur Springs’ River Tower Park in Tampa) are encouraged to pack picnic baskets and bring canned goods to benefit Tampa Bay Harvest, which is a non-profit, volunteer driven food recovery and gleaning organization. More info is at floridaorchestra.org. (Vinoy Park, St. Petersburg & River Tower Park, Tampa) INFO
MC Chris w/MC Lars/Random aka Mega Ran Two emcees and a Random. The names on the bill are apropos for what's going to happen at Crowbar tonight as Illinois rapper MC Chris celebrates a decade of touring with a stop at one of his favorite Florida venues. The players on this bill are making waves recently thanks to the way they've responded to Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek's snarky remark about nerdcore fans (Trebek called 'em "losers").
"Nerdcore is a genre that has been around for at least 15 years. I'm in my tenth year of touring, and my latest album MC Chris Is Dreaming peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard comedy charts this week," MC Chris told Billboard. "It's a small corner of the hip-hop world but it's a real and true respite to hundreds of thousands of people that are tired of being called losers, and would rather celebrate their nerdiness instead of trying to conform to society's mandates."
Mega Run, added this in a video: "Alex Trebeck, you lost a lot of respect/ I gotta check you off the rip for coming out of your neck. Nobody likes a know-it-all, condescending blow-hard", the rapper continues. "But Susan got the last laugh, 20 grand cash and you're good at all my shows, you don't even have to ask."
