The year was 1994. OJ Simpson was on the run in a white Ford Bronco. “Friends” debuted. Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace shared a $5 milkshake. And one song made everyone from your mama to your mama’s mama get on the dance floor when they heard the bass start and the 69 Boyz yell “The Butterfly? Uh-uh, that's old. Let me see the Tootsee Roll.”
The Boyz—from Jacksonville and Orlando—started with the help of Quad City DJs, another Florida group. The Boyz are in downtown St. Pete to dip baby dip, and we feel a whoop comin’ on. And if you miss the Boyz at this one, make plans to see them on the nutzo “Freestyle Explosion” bill coming to downtown Tampa in August.
Flashback Friday: 69 Boyz w/DJ L Mo & Co./Strizzo. Friday, June 4, 8 p.m. $10. Jannus Live, St. Petersburg. jannuslive.com
