J.T. Brown — the frontman of now-inactive roots n' roll outfit The Groves and currently a guitar-slinging singer-songwriter of fine folk rock persuasions — has been working on solo material for the past few years now, and putting together a collection of songs for a forthcoming debut, Phantom Heart. First single "Kool Aid Lips" was engineered and mixed by Shawn Kyle, Brown's robust vocals soaring over rollicking rhythms and a bright mix of acoustic and electric guitar textures threaded with the occasional haunting notes of slide.
According to the statement about the just-released video for the single, "This film is about letting go amidst the chaos that often comes with passion." It stars Brown and Melissa DiFazio, was shot in Dade City and Ybor City (at Lot1901), was written and directed by Dylan Melcher (with photo direction from Jordan Hicks), and follows the trajectory of a relationship in a cycle of scenes that are at turns sweet, romantic, sexy, and melancholy. Very nice camera work; I dig the final edit. Check it below. Download the song for free here, and see J.T. Brown perform live on Fri., Feb. 26, at Bloom Art Center (910 5th Avenue N., St. Petersburg); admission is $10.
