Weekend Tune-Up; Oddisee, Spoon and COIN lead a new music mixtape — stream it now

One hour of the best new hip-hop and indie rock.

The month of March came in like whoa. Don't ask me where the last two months have gone, but I'll roll with it. This past Friday treated us with a plethora of new tunes, which makes deciding which 15 songs make the cut a tricky decision, but one I love to do. Make sure to stay tuned each week for your weekly music medication.

Austin indie rockers Spoon have been doing this music thing for over 21 years, and yet they've managed to not sway too much into pop music territory, which can be a daunting feat. Their newest LP Hot Thoughts is hitting the shelves on March 17th, but they have gifted us "Can I Sit Next to You," a sexy and quirky new single. Spoon brought the funk and groove to this tune and I love it! This is definitely primed for late evenings. In case you missed it, Spoon have also booked a May 1 show at The Ritz in Ybor City.

Nashville-based COIN's new track "I Don't Wanna Dance" is a breezy and catchy tune, just what's needed for the weekend. Jittery guitars and carefree lyrics give this sleek synth pop song a fun vibe about losing your inhibitions. COIN will launch a North American headlining tour this spring, starting April 21. Check your local venues to see if they're paying your city a visit.

Oddisee is one of my fav emcees as of late. He's been on a steady clip of releasing consistent projects that have been well received, and you can add his latest LP The Iceberg to that list. Like much of the independent hip-hop world, Oddisee is bringing lyrics about heavy topics and social issues that plague are country. Putting his dynamic, thought provoking lyrics aside, The Iceberg is a masterfully produced record. Samples of funk, jazz, soul, hip-hop, and R&B all permeate into the entire album. "Things" is one of the lighter offerings and really displays Oddisee's balance as an artist; while he fires over a summery beat. Check out The Iceberg, it's definitely one of the finer hip-hop releases in some time. Listen to CL's chat with the emcee here.
