Maxwell is back, and lovers everywhere have rejoiced. The smooth neo-soul crooner has been absent for seven long years and his lack in the genre has been felt. He shared his new single "Lake By the Ocean" this past Friday and it's excellent. He discussed its meaning on a live Facebook Q+A: “Basically, the song represents falling in love after a very tough trial period in life and finding contentment in the smallest things next to the biggest things.” We can all relate to this, I'm sure. His upcoming album BlackSUMMERS'night, is due to be released July 1. Welcome back, Maxwell.
Ramona Gonzalez aka Nite Jewel has a new somberly-titled track, "Boo Hoo," but it sounds anything but with its '80s inspired dance breaks, swirling synths, bouncy keys, wistfully soaring vocals and overall disco vibe. "Boo Hoo" is off her newly announced LP, Liquid Cool, out June 10.
After a six-year hiatus, alternative rock trio Autolux has returned with Pussy's Dead. They've enlisted Boots to produce; he's worked with Beyonce, Run The Jewels and FKA Twigs, among others. As a result, there's a little more polish to their sound, but it's certainly not pop music. Electronic influence is sprinkled throughout the album, but it doesn't stop there; the album borrows from jazz, lo-fi and psychedelia aesthetics as well.
