VALIENT THORR "Viking cock rock" outfit Valient Thorr is a riddle wrapped in an enigma and slathered with shtick — they're from the inside of Venus, Walt Disney stole their time machine and left them trapped on this plane of existence, etc. The bottom line? Swaggering, long-haired, above-average van-rock with plenty of bluesy guitar solos. That should be enough in and of itself. (Orpheum, Ybor City)

FIRST ANNUAL FLAVOR OF JAZZ It's nice to see one of our larger arts institutions — that being Ruth Eckerd Hall — open up the stage to what is in effect a local smooth-jazz supergroup. Jazz to the Maxx includes keyboard player Allon Sams, guitarist Les Sabler, vocalist Fred Johnson and leader/saxophonist Gene Cannon (who bills himself on his website as a "smooth jazz lovers [sic] saxophonist"). Youth jazz bands will open. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Clearwater Jazz Holiday and Eckerd Hall education programs. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater) —ES
