Florida college students in their last two years who are majoring in journalism, mass communication, political science, public administration or business administration can apply for one of three college scholarships.
The Florida State Association of Supervisor of Election sponsors the scholarships, which award $1,200 each, to honor three former Supervisors of Elections: Escambia County's Joe Oldmixon, Highland County's Jimmy Whitehouse, and Pinellas County's Dorothy Walker Ruggles.
Ruggles served as SOE from 1988 until she died in 2000 (the early part of 2000, well before Florida's "hanging chad" drama).
Students can make application to the Supervisor of Election's office in the county where they are registered to vote. The deadline is Mar. 29 at 5 p.m.; you can get more details here.
