In lo, these many years of Summer Guides, we at CL have veered all over the map in preparing readers for Florida’s over-heated season, from tips on how to remain sensibly indoors to issues that lounged indolently on the beach.
But this year we got to thinking. It’s supposed to be a guide, a compendium of things to do. So why not make the whole thing… a calendar? It’s one of the things we do well every week, so why not lay out an array of possibilities for the entire summer?
The number we chose — 120 days — is more or less arbitrary (someone said it must have been inspired by the title of a notably deranged Pier Pasolini movie, but we’ll never tell). We didn’t find you something to do for every single day of our four-and-sort-of-five-month summer — you’re CL readers, we’ve gotta leave you some latitude to loaf creatively on your own. But since we didn’t have room to list everything, please drop us a line immediately ([email protected] or [email protected]) if there’s something you think we may not know about.
Calendars require calendar girls, of course. Or boys. We give you both — the classic bathing beauty on the cover and, above, her male counterparts as envisioned by photographer Rion Sabean. The USF senior won national press for his “Men-Ups”; we couldn’t resist running them again. You can see more of his work (including the “Men-Ups”) at this week’s PYT gathering (see box). If you want to print out a calendar boy or girl and post it on your workplace wall like my father used to do with his naked Marilyn Monroe calendar — well, good on you. And keep the rest of the calendar with you, too, for a guide that’ll last you all summer long.
