An amendment to a bill proposed by Naples Republican Garrett Richter that would mandate that insurance companies offer sinkhole coverage was rejected on a 20-12 vote Wednesday morning.
The amendment proposed by New Port Richey's Mike Fasano was necessary, he said, to avert an economic disaster. Richter's bill would force Citizens to take on all the comprehensive sinkhole policies likely to be dropped by private insurers if the bill passes. Fasano said he thought the intention of Governor Rick Scott and everybody in the Florida political establishment was to get people off of Citizens, the state-run insurer of last resort.
