The number of homeless men, women and children in Hillsborough County is 17,755, according to the county’s 2011 homeless count. Volunteers for the Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County conducted the count on Jan. 27.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires the biennial count to assess the needs of homeless individuals in an area. The count will affect things like funding for new and continued programs to help the homeless.
