A protest calling for a nationwide boycott of Fourth of July holiday celebrations is happening in downtown Tampa this weekend.

Organized by local vegan restaurants, including Vegg'd Out Vegan Kitchen, “The Boycott the 4th” protest will happen on Saturday, July 4, from 9:30 a.m.-noon, at the intersection of S. Tampa St. & E. Brorein St.

The group will then march down Tampa St. to Bayshore Blvd.

“As Black people, we’ve never truly felt free. This holiday represents a symbol of independence and freedom; and in the present climate, now more than ever, everyone is publicly observing how and why we as a people aren’t free,” says the Facebook event page

Coincidentally, the protest’s meeting spot is near the area where Tampa’s Trump Tower was once planned.

On a similar note, a “Family BLM March” will take place on Davis Islands this Thursday, July 2, from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m.
