I began receiving press releases about the Pallavi Patel Performing Arts Conservatory as soon as I acquired my Planet e-mail address. The persistent correspondence outlined building progress, gave the lowdown on upcoming classes and programs, and generally lauded the absolute wonderfulness of the new school. Construction was completed earlier this fall and in celebration of its first major addition since opening in 1987, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center presents the community with a free open house from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 4.
Classes are in session, so visitors can witness dance, music and acting students in action. Additionally, tour guides offer info on the various rooms in the new building, which comprise classrooms, offices, dressing rooms, studios, a media arts room and the 275-seat TECO Energy Foundation Theater.
Of course, a tour of the new conservatory wouldn't be complete without some sort of arts-related entertainment, and the center delivers with talents selected from its very own programs: teen rock band Squirrels Gone Wild, the original alumni of the center's Rock School, plays a few sets of live music; and the Community Arts Ensemble performs a special dance showcase.
Tables will be set up with coloring sheets and crayons to keep the young 'uns busy while folks obtain information for the upcoming winter session. Prospective students can also preview courses online (www.patelconservatory.org) or they can call 813-222-1000 to get a course schedule by mail.
The conservatory is a significant addition to our local arts scene. While it focuses on the training and exploration of the performing arts for potential arts professionals, it also allows for community members to seek a better understanding and appreciation of the arts. It is not an academic school, which means the classes are actually affordable and sometimes, you can even get a sneak peek for free. (A comedy workshop takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thurs., Dec. 2, in the Shimberg Playhouse, and a hip-hop record business workshop occurs from 6 to 9 p.m. on Fri., Dec. 3, in the TECO Theater; both are free and taught by experts in their respective fields.) Those interested in any of the free workshops should call 813-222-1066 to register.
