Even with all their ages combined, the guys of Jensen Serf Co. still don't have as many years on Earth as the vintage equipment they use on a daily basis. With Fender Silverface amps (a model manufactured from 1967-81), 19-year-old musicians Benjamin Saylor, Peter Kokkinakos and Asa Ferqueron have crafted a catalog of salt-washed, lo-fi garage rock reeking with the passion and recklessness of days gone by. "I like to go back in time with music," Ferqueron told me on a rainy morning in early July. "For the most part it gets better the farther back you go."
Friends since before puberty, the trio has generated a name for themselves with songwriting inspired by the likes of The Beach Boys, Beatles, Ramones, and Sex Pistols. Buried amid the crushing guitar and fuzzed-out vocals are stories about St. Petersburg, a city whose arts scene is being revived by a refreshingly collaborative youth culture. "I would say the area definitely affects the sound of the music," said Saylor. "Going to the beach, St. Pete landmarks — stuff like that."
The 'Burg has been good to the band, too. St. Pete-based Tom Dicks of Alexander & The Grapes often fills in for Ferqueron when he's away at school, and Saylor pays it forward by playing in The Happiness Machine (their guitarist, Nick Arnal, has also sat in with JSC). It's all being done as Saylor and his bandmates figure out a way to tour and record new songs onto the band’s eight-track, reel-to-reel analog recorder. And if it all seems like too much to handle, the boys have a simple solution for that, too. "As long as we're still having fun, we'll keep playing," explained Saylor. "Good press, bad press — it doesn't matter as long as we enjoy what we're doing." (11:20 p.m.-midnight, Fubar)
