Founded by Blast and the Detergents' husband-wife team Chris Nadeau (vocals, bass) and Susan Dickson (drums), Permanent Makeup formed in early 2010. They enlisted third member James Bess (vocals, guitar) to play their first gigs with nary a practice beforehand. Bess was a longtime friend and helped them record Blast tunes, and together they played Café Bohemia and the Gulf Coast Artist Alliance's Cirque du Surreal, where they set up in a tent inside a doctor's office with scary "gothic mimes" dancing alongside them, and where "some little bitch was bragging about how she flushed a cherry bomb and wrecked the whole toilet," Dickson recounted.

At those early gigs, lyrics were eschewed in favor of oral recitations of ad copy read aloud over the music. From random sparks to shudder-inducing scenes of dry humping, weirdness seemed to follow the band, though they come across as pleasantly low-key and wryly clever. Onstage, they go from the mild-mannered professionals to WWE-sanctioned thrashers (the Warrior is Nadeau’s favorite — his spirit animal, he says), and the tunes have real words now (changing and often amusing ones) with a specific ratio of booty shaking to bizarrity. Dickson mightily pounds the backbeat behind the band’s mix of late-’70s/early-’80s proto wave like Minutemen, Joy Division and Wire and more nowadays-ish post-punk. Live, they keep the crowd close and engaged; highly recommended. (8-8:30 p.m., Star Booty)
