Multimedia events are the Bay area's latest cultural trend, with the creative population banding together to bring appealing and sometimes extraordinary events to the general arts-loving public. This weekend, Maria Juan and Diana Mighdoll — recent alumni of USF and Moving Current — produce "On a Whim: An Evening of Dance, Music and Art" at Ybor's Centro Austuriano.
As the title suggests, there's plenty to catch (and keep) your attention. Beginning in the lobby at 7 p.m., visual artists Aaron Murray, Becky Rudolf and Layne Taylor display their works to live music by Drew Cutler. A dance performance in the theater follows and a variety of artists are showcased.
Juan performs in a piece set to the music of folk solo artist Iron and Wine. Mighdoll restages a piece that premiered last spring, her choreographic metaphors for the struggles within set against music by Interpol. Brian Fidalgo and Courtney Smith share a mellow duet, lifting and weaving and grooving to Erykah Badu's soulful tone.
Other featured choreographers include Leymis Bolaños, Kaley Fail, Erin Taylor and Elsa Valbuena.
