While you worked away at a paper or script or sketch, brownies baked and coffee brewed at St. Petersburg’s Globe Coffee Lounge. It was a hub for all things outside the norm, and for many years it became our norm. A familiar cast of characters behind the bar knew how to make deep conversation and a plate of hot food simultaneously. Owner and coffee shop mistress JoEllen Schilke knew when you needed coffee, a bite of chocolate or a tender hug. The best thing about the Globe closing in December? The lesson that a simple coffee shop can transcend physical boundaries and just become a state of mind.
