Last year, not long after graduating from high school, Jonathan Powell packed up his trumpet and headed off to the Big Apple. And so far so good. He's a member of several up-and-coming bands and could soon sign on with a high-profile act if he hasn't already. The diminutive player favors cargo pants, running shoes and Kangol hats over suits (it's unlikely he can afford Armani), but despite his hip-hop look, he's a serious jazz trumpeter. Most young players use Miles Davis' cool, vibrato-less tone and relaxed lines as a model; Powell, although an admirer of Miles, has wisely developed a beefier sound and busier style — kind of like a young Freddie Hubbard. What makes Powell even more deserving of this Best of the Bay nod is that he regularly comes back to play in Tampa Bay. Let's hope it continues.
