Gasparilla Music Festival expanded to two days for its third annual edition, and anyone who enjoyed the Sunday lineup but was maybe dragging ass from the previous day’s carousing was immediately invigorated by Trombone Shorty’s GMF-closing set, in which he threw down the gauntlet of hard-hitting jazz, blues, NOLA-flavored funk and groove-powered hip-hop. He showed off some truly avant brass chops in machine-gun bursts of trombone and trumpet along with more traditional toots and blasts, howled velvety-voiced choruses, and led his tight ensemble of players through covers of ZZ Top and James Brown along with originals, and eventually brought it all to a resounding close, ending an amazing weekend on a celebratory note. gasparillamusicfestival.com
