BEST INNOVATIVE ACT (THAT ALSO PLAYS DINNER SETS)

Acho Brother

There’s apparently no limit to what singer/guitarist Hector Mayoral and drummer Zak Byrd can accomplish. The duo convincingly plays straight reggae, pop and Latin jazz standards for the Ceviche dinner crowd (and a paycheck). But in the studio, or at a place like Globe Coffee Lounge, it’s a whole different story. Take for instance the twosome’s disc from last year, Las Chicas Del Volleyball. Mayoral’s hushed-yet-impassioned vocals and aggressive acoustic six-string exploits are propelled by tricky drum work, draped in myriad found sounds, ambient washes and impressive saxophone work from Jeremy Powell, as well as jazzy piano courtesy of Fay Olan. Acho Brother continues to push the envelope — singing in English and Spanish, messing with meter, alternating from sparse to soaring — on its latest release, Han.Ble.Ceya. myspace.com/achobrother
